Bad Feminist

Bad Feminist - Roxane Gay

Roxanne Gay’s book, Bad Feminist, has inspired so much of what Koeksuter has come to be. Her take on feminism and pop-culture is refreshing, sometimes hilarious and most of all exactly what Feminism needs right now. She makes Feminism relatable and real, by taking a look at entertainment and culture commenting on how they influence and relate to our everyday lives. She investigates pop-culture’s new female perspective and the pressure females undergo to be flawless.

“We have this tendency to put visible feminists on a pedestal. We expect them to pose perfectly. When they disappoint us, we gleefully knock them off the very pedestal we put them on,”

Roxanne explains why we can’t be perfect feminists, by acknowledging that feminism is not as simple as we would like it to be. She explains that it’s hard to make the right decisions when it comes to equality and female empowerment. By drawing from her personal life she gives insight and a honest account for what it means to be a feminist.

“Pink is my favorite color. I used to say my favorite color was black to be cool, but it is pink—all shades of pink. If I have an accessory, it is probably pink. I read Vogue, and I’m not doing it ironically, though it might seem that way. I once live-tweeted the September issue.”

Gay’s book is a a sharp and funny collection of essays, and although some may critique that she is unable to make any definitive conclusions about the meaning of the word feminist, that might be exactly the point she is making. As Gay writes in her book, “I am a mess of contradictions.” and her book is a honest and uplifting read of her personal experiences with feminism, rather than an academic insight to gender politics.

“No matter what issues I have with feminism, I am a feminist. I cannot and will not deny the importance and absolute necessity of feminism.”
